Spotlight: Backyard Oasis

Written by Barkman Concrete Published on August 9th, 2016

Creating the perfect backyard has always been a goal of people passionate about their living spaces. These passions encourage unique backyard landscapes that reflect a sense of pride and ownership. And this motivation is evident in recently developed Winnipeg homes.

This Winnipeg home in particular takes designing a unique backyard to a whole new level. The house features a lower level walkout basement with large windows. The goal was to create an elevated outdoor entertainment area by carving out a section of the backyard to contain a patio and spiral staircase.

Barkman’s Roman pavers in Sierra Grey act as the structural base for the huge patio outlined by a row of Desert Buff 8×4 Roman pavers. Rows of curvilinear RomanPisa retaining walls provide the visual interest and anchored both sides of the Roman paver staircase. The RomanPisa coping serves a double purpose — as a cap for the retaining walls and as stairway edges, providing a seamless integration between both walls and stairs.

Juniper and other low maintenance shrubs soften the look of the landscaping and add colour to the whole area. An exterior lighting system accents the yard greenery so it can be enjoyed both in the morning and at night. This gives the homeowner another 4,000 square feet of living space and a protected, private oasis.
