Gather the Family for Father’s Day

Written by Jason Plett Published on June 13th, 2018

Father’s Day is right around the corner and provides all of us an opportunity to honor and celebrate the father figures we look up to, the men who provide stability, love, guidance and strength to our lives, and who always have our backs. While presents and cards are great, the most valuable thing that you can give your dad is your time.  Here are 3 great ways to celebrate with your dad this Father’s Day.

Celebrate with Food
We all love food. It brings us together and provides a great way to celebrate. This Father’s Day, celebrate your dad by putting out a great spread for him to enjoy with the family. One good idea is to have a family BBQ. Food and family is one of the oldest and best combinations known to man, so marinade some steaks, fire up the grill and get cooking to share a lovely meal with dad. You can even take the party outdoors and make it a backyard picnic for some extra fun.

Backyard Fun
Does your dad love having a good time tossing a frisbee or playing bocce ball? Backyard games are another great way to bring the family together in a fun way. There are hundreds of different games that you can play in your backyard, some relaxed, others competitive, some with lots of equipment and others with next to none, the choice is up to you.  Some great options are Frisknock, a 2-on-2 game where you are trying to knock the opposing team’s bottle off their pole to score points; Kubb, or Viking’s Chess, a game in which two teams throw wooden dowels at the opposing team’s “pawns” in order to knock them down, and eventually go for the king; or Spike Ball, a volleyball-like game in which opposing teams volley a ball back and forth using a small trampoline.

Gather Around a Bonfire
Another great way to bring the family together to celebrate Father’s Day is to have a good old-fashioned bonfire. Fires are great because like food, they bring us together around a central and common point. They allow us to connect with nature in a visceral way and give us a sense of reconnecting with a time before the modern amenities we enjoy today. There are lots of great ways to enjoy a bonfire and in doing so, spend time with dad, so roast some s’mores, pull out the guitar, or tell a scary ghost story. One way you can really honor you dad is to ask him to tell you stories from his life. Ask him about his childhood, the best parts of his life, and for advice and wisdom. Not only will he love to tell you, but he will feel special and loved, and who knows, you might even learn something about your dad that you never knew before.

There are many ways which you can make this Father’s Day special, and these are just a few suggestions. However, at the end of the day, the best way you can celebrate your father this Father’s Day is by spending time with him and letting him know how much he means to you. Barkman wishes all the fathers and father figures a very special and happy Father’s Day!
