Project Background

The Port Coquitlam Community Centre is an ultramodern recreation and wellness facility designed to bring the community together. Spanning 205,000 square feet, the Centre was built to replace ageing facilities in the downtown core. This site is one of the largest projects the city has undertaken. With amenities like community skating rinks, fitness facilities and outdoor plazas, the Centre needed an eye-catching yet durable foundation to be able to handle the conditions of the site and the volume of traffic it would attract. This project was contracted by Actual Landscaping with PMG Landscape Architects as the landscape architect.

Design Inspiration and The Use of Barkman Products:

The Port Coquitlam Community Centre was designed to encompass the vibrant community it resides in. The idea was to honour the natural landscape and heritage of the former amenities it was to replace.

This project needed a product that was able to withstand the environment it was placed in, while also falling within a strict budget. Barkman Concrete was tasked with these two important needs. In the end, the Broadway 100mm Pavers crafted in a custom colour for the city were chosen for this project due to their ability to withstand constant wear and substantial loads of both pedestrian and road traffic. Barkman’s product offered a better value proposition because it was able to stay within the project’s budget while giving professional quality. Completed in 2021, the Community Centre sees thousands of visitors each day, walking across sturdy and striking Broadway 100mm Pavers.
