Project: Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan
Landscape Architect: Group2 Architecture
Contractor: PCL Construction and Precision Paving Stone and Landscape Ltd.
Location: Saskatoon, SK
Product: Broadway 100mm Pavers
Project Owner: Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival Inc.

Project Background:

Since 1985, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan has been putting on contemporary and traditional takes of Shakespeare’s works. Situated alongside the South Saskatchewan River and Meewasin Trail, the not-for-profit organization needed a permanent structure to accommodate the festivals and productions that go on in the summer months. This would be used not only for productions, but for showcasing local artists and other community events. Working with Group2 Architecture and PCL Construction, a brand-new outdoor facility was built, including a concrete amphitheater, tavern, and box office.

Design Inspiration and The Use of Barkman Products:

The outbuildings were designed in a modern take on the Tudor style. This was to encompass the contemporary takes on Shakespeare’s work by modernizing the architectural style of his era. In doing this, visitors are transported to a different time to really set the tone of the productions.

Contracted by Precision Paving Stone & Landscape Ltd., Barkman’s Broadway 100mm Paver family was chosen to be the walkway around the facility. Spanning 8000 square feet, the bold Broadway Pavers in 6 colours and 8 sizes fit the style of the new pavilion, with the ability to withstand the immense traffic it brings. With construction completed in 2020, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan is now a cultural centerpiece and can continue celebrating theatre, art, and culture for years to come.
