Spotlight: Forest Retreat

Note: Terra Nova was discontinued but we have Arborwood and Bridgewood as wood texture alternatives.

Some of the most dazzling backyards in the prairies can be found down dirt roads, hidden from view in groves of birch or pine. This poolside patio, installed last summer, is a prime example. Barkman Concrete has profiled this location before, but with a space like this, it’s worth going into a bit more depth.

Terra Nova slabs, laid in a standard running bond pattern, were chosen for the patio’s surface. The wood look complements the surroundings nicely while still feeling contemporary. Large boulders and river rock are used around the edges of the patio to add an additional dimension and texture to the landscape.

Kodah, was selected for the walls and steps. Kodah’s rough, chiseled texture offers contrast to Terra Nova’s cleaner lines, but its linear proportions ensure the two create a cohesive look. The block is ideally-suited for large builds like this because the relatively large scale of each piece allows it to cover a significant amount of space without making the area appear overly busy; a problem that often crops up in smaller retaining wall systems. The raised platform is a particularly nice touch, functioning as a dining space or as a diving board if the occasion arises.

The combination of rustic and contemporary elements is what makes this backyard really work. It’s a space that could seamlessly transition from play and laughter in the afternoon into a dinner party and cocktails at night. What more could you ask for in a forest getaway?
