In the early ’70s, Barkman ran a series of illustrated ads in local newspapers. The ads were intended to advertise Barkman steps, pavers, and septic tanks, which at the time were Barkman’s primary product lines. In the years following, Barkman moved away from freestyle cartoons and began using photographs and realistic illustrations almost exclusively. It’s fun to look back on these though. There is a certain whimsical quality to these drawings that you simply do not see anymore.
