How to Clean Efflorescence

Written by Barkman Concrete Published on August 27th, 2024

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of cleaning your pavers using NMD 80 & EF-fortless, powerful efflorescence cleaners Barkman sells across our dealer network.

Efflorescence or “efflo” looks like a white haze or stain and is common on new pavers. Efflo isn’t a defect, but it does take time to wear away without the aid of cleaners like NMD 80 or EF-fortless. These products do not require you to do any scrubbing and will never expire. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a DIY enthusiast, these tips will help you achieve a stain-free finish you can enjoy for years.

After pavers have been installed and before landscaping has begun, follow the procedures below to remove efflorescence, job site debris, and dirt.

Step 1: Pre-Wet the Paver Surface

Lightly pre-wet (do not soak) the paver surface with clean water. The goal is to dampen the surface without creating puddles. Pre-wetting helps the cleaning solution distribute evenly and prevents it from being absorbed too quickly by the pavers.

Step 2: Apply Cleaner

Using an EC Jet for Pavers, spray (don’t pour) NMD 80 or EF-fortless onto the paver surface using overlapping strokes. This technique ensures even coverage across the entire area. NMD 80 should be mixed with water at a 4:1 ratio before applying. EF-fortless can be used undiluted.

Step 3: Allow for Dwell Time

Let the cleaner dwell on the surface for 5-7 minutes. During this time, the cleaner will break down and lift the contaminants. Be careful not to let the product dry on the surface, as this can lead to streaking or uneven cleaning.

Step 4: Rinse the Paver Surface

Begin rinsing the pavers from the highest point of elevation to the lowest, using long, even strokes that overlap each other. This technique prevents streaking and ensures that the surface is thoroughly rinsed.

Rinsing Options:

Low Pressure Rinse (Recommended): To rinse the surface, use the EC Jet with the soap valve turned off. This method provides an effective, controlled rinse without being too harsh on the pavers.

Pressure Washer: If you have access to a pressure washer, use a wide-tip nozzle to avoid damaging the paver joints. Be cautious near the joints to prevent “blowing out” the sand.

Garden Hose: A garden hose can be used in place of a pressure washer. While not as powerful, it can still effectively rinse the cleaner and contaminants.

Step 5: Re-Apply for Stubborn Stains

If efflorescence remains after the initial application, reapply cleaners using the same method. Some efflo will take more than one cleaning to remove completely.

Additional Tips & Notes

  • Wear Safety Equipment: Goggles and gloves are recommended.
  • Do not Pour Cleaner: Spray the cleaner on; do not pour.
  • Store at Room Temperature: Do not store the cleaners where they may freeze.
  • Joint Care: Pay special attention to the joints between pavers. While rinsing, avoid dislodging the joint sand, as this could compromise the pavers’ stability.
  • Post-Cleaning Inspection: After rinsing, inspect the paver surface to ensure that all efflorescence has been removed. If any areas need additional cleaning, reapply the cleaner as needed.
  • Sealing the Pavers: Once the pavers are clean and dry, consider applying a sealer to protect them from future staining and enhance their appearance. A good sealer can also help prevent the recurrence of efflorescence.

Remember, efflorescence is a natural occurrence and doesn’t damage your pavers, slab, or walls. While it typically fades over time, following the steps outlined above can accelerate the process, allowing you to fully enjoy your Barkman product immediately after installation.
